While many OA publishers are known to be highly reputable, a few are not

  • “Predatory publishing” is a dubious practice that detracts from the positive qualities of OA Publishing
  • It is regarded as entirely disreputable, and is aimed directly at researchers seeking to publish
  • It involves various tactics employed by dubious publishers - and includes spamming researchers - in an effort to persuade them to submit to their journals
  • The OA movement has responded to this impediment in a number of ways, including:
    • Recommending that prior to choosing a publisher, researchers check various reputable sources that comment on, or grade individual journal quality
