AUTHOR-LEVEL METRICS
are measures that indicate the impact of the scholarly output of an individual researcher

AUTHOR-LEVEL METRIC: h-INDEX

h-index

  • Is commonly used to (employing author data) to achieve a metric indicating an individual's level of productivity and impact
  • The calculation process:  matching the author's number of publications to the number of citations received
     
  • The calculated h-index represents the number of author's publications (h) that have received at least (h) citations

Example:  An author's h-index of 20 indicates that the author has produced at least 20 publications that have been cited at least 20 times

ARTICLE-LEVEL METRICS

ARTICLE LEVEL METRICS
are measures that quantify scholarly research and impact at the article level

  • they tend to be calculated via citation counts (measuring the number of times an article is cited)
  • "altmetrics" data is also considered to be an article-level metric (measuring data from non-traditional sources eg social media engagement, references in news and blogs etc) 
  • article-level metrics are available through Web of Science (a subscriber database)

JOURNAL-LEVEL METRICS
Journal-Level metrics are used as evidence with which to evaluate a journal's impact and quality

  • This type of metric is achieved  by calculating the numbers of articles published per year, plus the number of citations to articles published in the chosen journal

JOURNAL LEVEL METRIC: JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR

Journal Impact Factor

  • This type of metric measures the frequency that the average article in a journal has been cited within given two years

Where to locate Journal impact Factors (JIF)

SCImago
Via a web search using the journal's title
      examples:  "Medical Journal of Australia", "Australian Journal or Rural Health"
Often listed on the Journal's  homepage

What is measured by SCImago Journal Rank?
Measures the impact, and influence/prestige of a chosen journal

Method:  calculated using weighted citations in a selected year, by documents published in the journal in the previous three years
