FindIt: Searching

Helpful information to get you started using the library's search tool, FindIt.

Keyword Searching

Researching using the library catalogue is easier when you use keywords.

  1.  First, you will need to analyse your question and locate the following keywords.

Topic Words: These identify the subjects of the question

Directive Words: Gives instruction on what to do with the information

Scope Words: Limit the information e.g. date, location or demographic

 

Example Question

Discuss the impact of social media on modern society.

Topic Words: social media, impact

Directive Words: discuss

Scope Words: modern society

 

  1. Before beginning your search, take time to consider these keywords.
  • Brainstorm synonyms for the topic and scope words
  • Use a dictionary or Wikipedia to understand your topic

Boolean Searching

Boolean searching is when you use AND, OR and NOT between keywords to limit or expand your search.

The University of New Hampshire has instructions on how to use Boolean operators in library databases.

Searching

Type your keywords in the findit@ search box on the library homepage.

Find the advanced search option just under the search bar on the library homepage or the results page.

Edit the search term fields and search options to narrow down your search.
