Microsoft Office is now available free to current Melbourne Polytechnic students. It allows you to install Office on 5 PC's or Macs and also includes online versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. 

Login to your student portal and click on the nine dots, top left of the screen.

Select "more apps from the drop down menu.

Select "install apps" from top right of screen.

 

Click on "Microsoft 365 apps" from the dropdown menu. 

Click on "Install office".

 

Alternatives

Google Docs is is a free Web-based application in which documents and spreadsheets can be created, edited and stored online. Files can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection and a full-featured Web browser. You will have to use your Google account or create one.

LibreOffice is a free alternative to Microsoft Office. It is fully compatible with MS Office so you can both open and save in the Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint formats. You download this free software to your computer or device.

Purchasing a computer

Computerbank

Computerbank offer low cost recycled computers to Australian Commonwealth Concession Card or Health Care Card holders, asylum seekers (referral or card) and students. Laptops are only available to concession card holders. Devices run Linux which is a suitable alternative for studies that do not require CAD or Adobe Creative Suite. Take your Australian Commonwealth Concession Card, Health Care Card, Student Card or proof of Asylum Seeker status to Computerbank during opening hours to buy a machine. Safe Computing

  • Have a backup plan
  • Install antivirus software
  • Install updates and patches
  • Be wary of sites known to carry infections
  • If it is too good to be true, it probably is!
