Research Fundamentals: Step 4: Write & Reference

Referencing

It is expected that you acknowledge all authors whose work you have drawn upon in the construction or your assignment.
Referencing your work correctly is essential to avoid plagiarism.

Online Referencing Tool

Use the Online Referencing Tool ERNI to help create accurate citations in both Harvard and APA7 styles.

At Melbourne Polytechnic two styles of referencing are used: Harvard Style, and APA7 Style.

Check with your teacher to find out which style is used for your studies.

Referencing Fundamentals Libguide

This guide outlines how to do both in-text citations and references along with the reasons why you should reference and what types of materials you must reference.

Putting it all together

Now that you have:

  • read and understood your topic
  • clarified the type of assignment you need to write
  • identified relevant keywords and phrases
  • searched library databases and other sources for information
  • sifted through and evaluated the information you have found
  • ... it is time to start writing that assignment.

Make sure you work through the above steps before writing rather than writing before you've understood the topic or found resources. There are plenty of resources to help you.
