Online and off-campus support for teaching staff: Embedding learning resources in Moodle

This guide provides links to online resources to support the development of teaching and learning resources off-campus.

Embedding textbooks into Moodle

Melbourne Polytechnic's ebook collection consists of thousands of popular books including textbooks which can be easily embedded into Moodle for access by students. Follow the steps below to create a link from the Library's ebooks:

1. search for an ebook title on Melbourne Polytechnic library's website by clicking on the eBooks tab and typing in a subject or author.

2. Once you've located the ebook you would like to embed, look for the permalink on the right-hand side of the screen

3. Click on the Permalink icon and a URL will be displayed.  Copy the URL and embed it into Moodle.  The ebook will now be permanently available via the Moodle page.

4.  Students will be required to login to their Library account to access the ebook if they are off-campus or on their own personal device.

As always, Library staff can help you locate, or purchase an ebook if it's not currently in the Library collection.

Creating reading lists in Moodle

Learning Resources Manager is a tool that teaching staff can use to create reading lists for subjects within Moodle.

Reading lists within Moodle can include journal articles, ebooks, online videos, and external webpages.

The benefits of using Learning Resources Manager include

  • teachers can view which students have accessed the list
  • copyright compliance is supported as resources are linked directly to the original source
  • reading lists created by staff can be shared with other staff at Melbourne Polytechnic

The video below explains how to create a reading list using the Learning Resources Manager, and how to add resources.

If you would like assistance with using the Learning Resources Manager, please contact Library staff at any campus.
