Installing the plugin for MSWord

The Word plugin is the essential tool for creating citations and bibliographies in Microsoft Word

Using Zotero 5.0 you no longer have to separately install the Word plugin.

If you're running Zotero 5.0 or Zotero Standalone 4.0, the word processor plugins are bundled with Zotero and should be installed automatically for each supported word processor on your computer when you first start Zotero.

Applying citations using MS Word and Notepad

  • Right click on an element and select 'Create Bibliography from Item...'


  • Select the Melbourne Polytechnic style. If you wish to paste a Citation select 'Citations' as the output mode, otherwise use Bibliography.
  • For the output method select copy to clipboard if you with the paste the citation/reference into another document.

Example :

Diebold, FX 2007, Elements of forecasting, 4th edn, Thomson, Mason, Ohio.

  • Click on the Zotero tab at the top of the MS Word window.


  • You must insert a citation before you can insert a reference.

    Click on 'Add/Edit Citation'


  • Select Melbourne Polytechnic

  • A search bar will appear


  • Below is an example of starting a search using the title. You can also use the author, year.


  • Clicking on the small down arrow on the left hand side changes the lookup device to a classic view if you prefer.


  • Select which title you want to add.


  • Press enter and the citation will appear in the document where your cursor is.



  • Zotero for MS Word remembers which citations you have added to your word document and so when you insert your references it will place the correct references in the document.

    Click on Insert Bibliography

  • The bibliographic citation will appear using the Melbourne Polytechnic Harvard style (if you have chosen that style)
