Zotero: How to add references from different sources

  • The URL bar icon varies, depending on the web page you are viewing



  • To save the citation select the icon

  • When multiple items are on the screen (eg a list of search results), the icon will display as a folder

  • Select the folder icon, and tick items to be saved

Add item by identifier number

  • Use the wand icon in Zotero to add by ISBN, DOI or PMID (PubMed) numbers



  • Paste in (or type) the ISBN that you wish to search for and press enter.


Export from a database

  • Zotero reads files in .ris format
  • Locate the Export to RIS Format option in the database you are using
  • Save the file
  • Drag and drop the saved file onto the Zotero Desktop

Manually adding to Zotero

  • Click on the add new button and select the citation type.



  • You will then need to update/edit elements of the metadata in the right hand column of your Zotero screen.



Export from FindIT@

  • From your FindIT@ search results list, select your document
  • Choose the Export button in the right-hand column of the FindIt screen
  • From the Export Manager menu, select Direct Export in RIS format
  • Select Save
  • Give the file a location and name, Save
  • Select the downloaded file from its location (If using Chrome: downloads appear in the taskbar)
  • From the Open With menu, select the Zotero icon from the programs list

Export from Google Scholar

  • From the Google Scholar search results screen, select the Save to Zotero button

  • A list of all items from the search screen will appear

  • Select the plus sign beside the item you wish to export to Zotero
